"Shadow Music" was a broad term given to the Thai guitar pop movement of the 1960s and the groups that came out of it -- all under the profound influence of early Western rock and roll. British instrumental wonders The Shadows (as in Cliff Richards & The Shadows) were the origin of the genre's title -- also coined "Wong Shadow" or early Thai "string" music. Shadow records were often marketed as "Thai Modernized Music" which it was in the truest s... READ MORE ABOUT: VARIOUS / SUBLIME FREQUENCIES, Shadow Music Of Thailand, Sublime Frequencies ![]()

Mark Gergis and Alan Bishop of Sublime Freqencies finally deliver a hugely welcome follow-up to the 'Thai Pop Spectacular 1960s-1980s' with 15 tracks of mindblowing exotic soul. As anyone who witnessed their DJ sets or followed this series will attest, these guys have a deadly ear for a groove, again pulling out unimaginable variations and charmingly off-kilter permutations of disco, pop, soul and funk filtered through the unique Thai character t... This is Raï music from Algeria as you've not heard it before. In the early 1970s, a new group of singers and musicians were operating on the northwest coast, and what they pioneered was a sound that eventually reached worldwide status by the end of the decade; however, their names are relatively unknown to this day outside Algeria. This crucial and defining period of the development of Raï is criminally ignored and overlooked by Algerian music hi... The Union Solidarity & Development Association (USDA) has grown to become one of the most pervasive organizations in Burma, claiming over 22 million members (nearly half the country's population). Very little is known of the USDA to the outside world, but it has become imbedded throughout the social infrastructure of the state. Its widely-published statutes expressing the importance of state sovereignty and public solidarity can be found in all m... Another absolutely priceless transmission from the Sublime Frequencies label, and without doubt one of their best so far. Bollywood Steel Guitar is the most comprehensive collection to date of steel-guitar pop music from India. All 21 tracks featured here were film hits from 1962-1986 and all the masters of the steel guitar sound from the period are represented: Van Shipley, Kazi Aniruddha, S. Back in stock!!! Given the amount of Iraq we all see daily on our TV screens, it seems almost abhorrent as to how ignorant the West (and by West, read 'me') are in respect to their cultural output. Back in stock! This is just so great - a new super-obscure collection of weird and wondeful Thai pop music from the supremely good Sublime Frequencies crew. And not only that - we're honestly pretty sure that it's one of label's most charming, interesting and delicious compilations yet - taking us into a world of alien pop music that's just too f*cked up and too inspirational for words. Probidao is defined by Sublime Frequencies as a particular variety of gang-oriented funk given to electronic music played out at bailes in various Brazilian favelas. Roughly recorded and distributed under the most lo-fi circumstances, this music is rarely heard outside the slums of Rio De Janeiro as controlled by the notorious Comando Vermelho criminal organisation (hence the C.V. of the title). The Sublime Frequencies audio colonialism carrack docks into South America, having fully exhausted Asia's musical resources. The focus of this latest compilation is Latin America's psychedelic rock and pop music, mainly from the '60s and '70s. A third volume in the series, compiled by sonic adventurer Laurent Jeanneau, this disc features recordings made in the most remote, tribal extremities of North Vietnam taking in the music of a number of different peoples along the way (the Giay Lu, Red Zao and Black Hmong). Without knowing a lot about the troubled lands of Laos it's hard for me to really work out a difference between music that is or isn't from the various ethnic minorities gathered there, but trust Alan Bishop's Sublime Frequencies imprint to get us more than simply a history lesson with this latest disc from the label. I know we have a tendency to harp on about the Sublime Frequencies releases but it's not our fault that they just keep getting better and better is it? Last month it was the killer Thai Pop Spectacular that caught our ears, and this month we've been stopped in our tracks by this latest collection of music from Burma. The first volume in Sublime Frequencies' series of 'Molam' releases took us on a journey through a lesser heard area of Thai music, a kind of country folk music from the rural northeast of Thailand which centres primarily on male and female singers (Molam literally means 'master singer') and the khaen (a bamboo mouth organ) and phin (a lute-like instrument). Here we see the style diversify as it hits the 1970s and 1980s and introduces the sound o... I can't say I'm overly familiar with Moroccan music so a disc like this is pretty darned useful for diving into an alien world. This particular disc was recorded back in 1983 by Alan Bishop and documents his travels in the country at this time. I know there are a lot of them to sift through but the Sublime Frequencies cds really are something special, and this particular one is about as special as they come. This otherworldly disc is comprised of unprocessed field recordings of an assortment of insects – mostly cicadas and dragonflies. Apparently it’s these latter beasties that make up the most distinctive element of these truly surreal soundscapes: according to Alan Bishop’s liner notes, there’s a folk tale behind the so-called Broken-Hearted Dragonflies, indigenous to Burma. 'Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra Vol.1' was the first ever Sublime Frequencies and my my is it a good one. Collecting the tracks from tapes he managed to acquire back in 1989 Alan Bishop has come up with a window into a world of pop music rarely heard by those outside of this equatorial island.
