Uh oh, Kele Okereke's "Mercury is in retrograde". Not being much of a follower of astrology, I've no idea what he's on about, but worse than that, unlike the rather ace previous foray into indie/dance/pop shenanigans, 'Flux', this missive comes across as a bit confused, riddled with daft vocal cut-ups and stylisations, not to mention big, wacky horns and dubstep allusions. At least they're having a go at being a bit off the wall though, which mak... READ MORE ABOUT: BLOC PARTY, Mercury, Wichita ![]()

Bloc Party are the latest band to release a single in conjunction with the NME, and this CD format is the accompaniment to the remix disc you get with the magazine. Here, you get the original version of 'Flux', a version recorded live at Madison Square Garden and B-side 'Emma Kate's Accident'. The A-side is one of the most electronically enhanced songs the band have ever produced with a thumping 4/4 beat and a rampaging synth bassline. It's inter... **Clear Vinyl** Bloc Party are the latest band to release a single in conjunction with the NME, though this 7" format harbours material you wouldn't get with the magazine, more specifically the original version of 'Flux' and B-side 'The Once And Future King'. The A-side is one of the most electronically enhanced songs the band have ever produced with a thumping 4/4 drum pattern and an accompanying rampaging synth bassline, whereas its very much b... Arguably the standout track on A Weekend In The City, 'Hunting For Witches' at last sees release as a single. This is one of those songs that seems to have dominated TV festival coverage so far this summer, even getting an airing at last weekend's Live Earth. On this studio rendition there's a good deal more trickery going on, what with the zany vocal edits and that opening with panning cut 'n' paste samples, not to mention one of the more memora... Arguably the standout track on A Weekend In The City, 'Hunting For Witches' at last sees release as a single. This is one of those songs that seems to have dominated TV festival coverage so far this summer, even getting an airing at last weekend's Live Earth. In fact it's a live version of the track on the A-side of this format, which translates brilliantly as a raw, twin telecaster assault, sporting one of the more memorable guitar riffs to come... This second single to be taken from Bloc Party's A Weekend City LP lacks the heavy-duty beats of previous hit 'The Prayer' but pulls a similarly epic chorus out of the bag. This is ambitious guitar pop on a grand scale with some positively immense walls of guitar thrown at it. B-side 'Selfish Son' is bristling with electronic threat and tension right up until the twinkling xylophone chorus rolls in and lightens things up. Also included is a rewor... Having scored themselves NME’s coveted Album Of The Year Award for their debut, Silent Alarm, Bloc Party now find themselves at that most difficult of junctures: the cusp of releasing a follow-up. A Weekend In The City is the band’s shot at a quasi-concept album; a set of songs preoccupied with the everyday machinations of metropolitan life and the weight of modern times in general (check the references to dismal escapism via sudoku). “East Londo... Giving a taster of their forthcoming second album, this single sees the band getting far more ambitious with their sound, which here is given an enormous electronic push with neon synth work in the choruses - they've obviously been listening to TV On The Radio. Check out the Jonny Greenwood-style guitar solo too. CD includes B-side, 'We Were Lovers' and a Paul Epworth remix.

Latest missive from Bloc Party, CD1 featuring the original version of “Two More Years” plus a hillarious remix of “Banquet” from The Streets. Good move.

Marginally more inventive than the usual pallid crap NME increasingly pedal these days, Bloc Party are nonetheless a band with guitars who have fell back on the trusty remix album to keep their profile up. Is it 1995 again?! Yet just as you try to avoid making eye-contact and move on, you notice that there's some alright people on cut+shut duty this time; Four Tet, M83, Erol Alkan, Ladytron and Mogwai... Maybe we've been a bit hasty. As ever ther... READ MORE ABOUT: BLOC PARTY, Silent Alarm Remixed, Wichita ![]()

*Limited Edition CD with Bonus DVD* Part of the reaction to the influx of Strokes induced skinny-ties and Converse bands over the past two years, Brighton based Bloc Party are, along with The Futureheads and Franz Ferdinand, at the vanguard of a new British wave of intellectual guitar music. Tipped for big things this lot, already mentioned in the same breath as Franz Ferdinand and the Rapture, and threatening to give Interpol a run for their money – the NME love them and , erm, so should you. No, really.
