For his latest album, UK avant-folk maverick Richard Youngs seems to be converging on some of the most assured and firm-footed vocal work of his career to date, fashioning rock-solid songs from typically leftfield instrumental tactics. On 'Broke Up By Night', Youngs sounds like a gnarled old folkie of almost Ewan MacColl proportions, albeit accompanied by organ drone and wispy electronics. It's a rather magical, mantra-like cadence he elicits, ... READ MORE ABOUT: RICHARD YOUNGS, Under Stellar Stream, Jagjaguwar ![]()

You never quite know what you're letting yourself in for when you pick up a RIchard Youngs record. Previously he's given us psychedelic drones, acid folk song cycles and in Sapphie, a brilliant straight-up acoustic singer-songwriter record. For this latest venture he's followed in the footsteps of Astral Social Club's Octuplex (a record he himself contributed to), and embraced more dance-friendly electronic music (the album credits simply read ... Autumn Respone must rank as one of Richard Youngs' most accessible, simply assembled albums to date. At least that's how it seems to begin with. Not long into the album you start to notice that when Youngs double up his vocal he actually seems to be repeating his original track through a separate channel at an offset starting point, establishing a kind of oddly out of phase effect that warps the structure of the whole piece. This tends to caus... READ MORE ABOUT: RICHARD YOUNGS, Autumn Response, Jagjaguwar ![]()
Another choice piece of catalogue from the reliable Richard Youngs, ‘May’ is one of his best-loved works and was originally released back in 2002. Made up of various recordings in Youngs’ home-town of Harpenden this sees Youngs again in ‘solo’ mode, using only the guitar and vocals to create his vision. However, in contrast to ‘Sapphie’, this album moves toward shorter compositions and more ‘classic’ folk structures comparable with ‘Pink Moon’-er... Much has been made of the burgeoning 'folktronica' movement in the last few years, though something has always struck me about the music, as good as it might be it isn't particularly folky for the most part and neither is it really that obviously electronic. 'Airs of the Ear' however, a 2003 album from the great Richard Youngs, is exactly that - those of you who have chanced upon his many solo guitar/vocal recordings (for instance the wonderful '... I have to admit I've been dreading this review all day, how do I do justice to a record like this, a record so pure and so beautiful? Often it's easy to put your thoughts on an album into words, but 'Sapphie' is such a personal album, and it does what so many of the best albums do to you, it makes you feel like you're the only one that understands it. Richard Youngs has a huge back catalogue now, but for me this is the shining gem - it was origin... READ MORE ABOUT: RICHARD YOUNGS, Sapphie, Jagjaguwar ![]()

Originally released as a limited edition of 300 vinyl copies back in 1990 ‘Advent’ soon became a huge critical success, being snapped up for a re-issue by the influential Table of the Elements label and written up by Alan Licht in his ‘minimal top ten’ list. This is though the first time since 1990 that the album has ever been available on vinyl, and I can say that it sounds as fresh and involving now as it ever has done. Some of you might know Y... I must confess that on first listen I thought the opening song on Richard Young's seventh album was about runner beans... Needless to say it isn't. Snapped in a bigfoot-style pose on the cover of this month's Wire, Young (who has been making music for well in excess of 20 years) kicks off 'The Naïve Shaman' through the hypnotic manoeuvres of 'Life On A Beam'; wherein a deep and highly addictive cyclical electric-bass thrums away as blistered spas... River Through Howling Sky is Youngs’ latest full-length, returning to the more meditative and drone-y side of his songcraft (circa sapphie (1998) and making paper (2001)), although this is no true devolution : all of his recordings to date have some measure of these qualities. English born and bred, but residing in Glasgow, Scotland (where river through howling sky was recorded), Youngs has remained busy over the last three years. in addition to ... This is the latest output from the UK's Richard Youngs, normally his release would reside in the avant/experimental section, however this release sees Youngs utilizing his acoustic guitar and voice with such skills, that this album can fit in with so called "indie-convention". There are drones, there is minimalist plucking, but there is also some of the most beautiful fractal psychedlia and acoustic warmth amidst these songs, Youngs needs a wide...
